It’s super hard to pick just 10, but for each photo I’ll write a little about why I picked it and what I love about it. These photos are in no particular order! They are all labeled with the lens that I use, and all were taken with the Canon 5Dmk3 for 2018.
It was actually taken in the Seattle Arboretum. I go up there every year in August to take the recessions and visit my sister who lives in Seattle. I love this photo so much because of the warm purples, the blurry background, the magical flowers, the iridescent wings, but mostly the look on her face. It looks like she’s off in her own little dreamland full of magical fairies and wonderful sugarplums. Sigma 135mm 1.8 Art Lens. Location: Seattle Arboretum
You wouldn’t know it from this photo in the smile on her face, but it was actually freezing cold this day. It was December, and while I normally shoot ice fairies in December it’s normally slightly warmer than it happened to be that day. She was happy in the beginning, but as time went on it became more and more difficult for her. I love this photo because the depth of field in all of the blurry background it still shows off the crystals that are hung in the trees. I also like that she’s turned slightly away from the camera in her body so that I can see both wings in the back of the dress. Sigma 135mm 1.8 Art Lens

This is the last photo that we took on this day of this child. You can see that she has bruises and dirt on her legs, her hair is a bit messy, and she actually started out this session in a more holiday themed dress but then ended up falling on her face midway through. This picture is entirely her however, and I love that it shows that you don’t have to BE perfect for a perfect picture. Sigma 135mm 1.8 Art Lens

Probably one of my most fun family portrait sessions in many years. These two boys are hysterical, and each of them had all their own ideas for posing. Especially the older brother, who decided he was going to pose like he was on the cover of a music album twice during our session. I love this photo, because it’s clear that everyone is having fun. Even the dad is having a great time with his wife and sons. They just happen to be getting portraits made. Sigma 135mm 1.8 Art Lens

This is one of the very first dance studio images that I was super proud of. I really love the dynamic jump pose but also how serene she looks. I lit this with two lights, one at 45° to my right, and one at 90° to my left as a rimlight. The bent wrist on the top hand is technically incorrect, and this dancer does not like it, but I feel like it doesn’t detract from the image as much as she thinks it does. I also love the blue leotard against the black backdrop. Sigma 50mm macro 2.8 lens

Another in studio dance photo that I was really proud of. I love how the light accentuates her form and muscles, and this was a very difficult photo to get because she was actually turning! So the timing was difficult as well as she had to stay turning in the light, because I use strobes, the lights are not always on. The flash. So she can’t see where the lights are going to be in order to stay in them. It’s difficult! I love the way the skirt flares up around her and you can see the outline of her fingers and her hair. I love this photo because of the back lighting through the UGA Herty Field water fountain. It has a little bit of haze and magical golden us that it wouldn’t otherwise have. You can see the sun through the fountain, but you can also see it around her leg and through her skirt and in her hair. It just serves to accentuate her perfect Sissone dance pose here with her lovely pointed toes and ankles. It was definitely a challenging image to create, because she couldn’t hear me over the loud water. So I had to mimic what she was supposed to change every time she attempted this jump! And I am not a dancer, so I can’t demonstrate very well! Sigma 135mm 1.8 Art Lens.

This pair of sisters picked all their own poses. I told him where to stand, but that’s where my input ended. I love the expression on their faces. You can tell that they love each other so much and that they have a great sister connection. My favorite part about this picture though, are the girls’ toes. It sounds weird to say, but you can read a lot of the persons body language from their feet and hands. These girls are enjoying each other, and not thinking about me. Sigma 135mm 1.8 Art Lens

This photo holds my heart for so many reasons, most of them are because of who this child is. She is the daughter of longtime friends of mine, but she is also quite her own personality and doesn’t enjoy being told what to do. I love this image, because it is one of the first photos I felt like I really captured her personality, but also Ended up with a very beautifully framed and ready to hang portrait of her. This was actually the last shot of the evening on top of the north parking deck in downtown Athens. This dancer is actually a dance teacher, who came along to help me in the very beginning with my dance photo journey. I particularly love this photo of her as it accentuates the flexibility in her back, and the light flowing down her body and legs. Sigma 50mm Macro 2.8 lens.
