Top 10 photos from 2017

Top 10 Per year

Top 10 Per year

It’s super hard to pick just 10, but for each photo, I’ll write a little about why I picked it and what I love about it. These photos are in no particular order! They are all labeled with the lens that I use, and all were taken with the Canon 5Dmk3 and the Sigma 135mm 1.8 Art lens this year. You’ll notice that all of these are fairy images because I wasn’t taking family photos this year.

The sunset happened to line up perfectly with this little bridge and tree alleyway that day. These two golden haired sisters these two chocolate brown little fairy dresses. I love this back lighting and the feeling between them as the light is coming through their golden wings. I went back-and-forth on whether I should have them holding hands for this picture, and actually took both photos, but ultimately decided that I like this one best because the other one looked like they were playing ring around the Rosie.I have this image on the front cover of a sample album at my studio. It’s perfect to showcase the orange velvet on the album and the minimal image stripe in acrylic on the front cover.

I love the sister connection in this photo probably more than almost any other photos that I’ve ever taken. They love each other so very much. Everything else in this image falls away for me. It’s unnecessary. They don’t need crowns or wings or pretty dresses or an ice fairy swing. They only need each other. The look on their faces shows the most special connection that they have as a pair. I can’t wait to see these girls again! Location: State Botanical Garden of Georgia
This was actually taken at the Anna Triant dress shoot out in Texas. It was miserably hot that day, and this poor girl got a dress that probably weighed about 20 pounds. It has tiny straps, so it was cutting into her shoulders. At one point she was actually in tears, but being a professional model she managed to hold it together and twirl in this giant dress before she had to take it off. I love this photo because of the ruffles in the dress and the green background. Location: Rockwall, Texas
This is such a powerful image to me, because it shows the character of this girl. She has scoliosis, and has had many back surgeries to correct it. I asked her if she wanted a photo of her scar, and she said yes she did. Then she added, “I am a warrior and I want to be able to see it in my pictures.” I actually had to buy this kid ice cream after losing a bet to her during this photo session. She said dolphins are not porpises, and I swore they were. I told her I’d buy her ice cream if I was wrong. I was wrong. So, right after we finished up with these photos, I met them all in Watkinsville at the Dairy Queen. Location: State Botanical Garden of Georgia
The softness and depth of field or what makes this image for me. I focused on her little eyelashes, and just let the rest fall away. To me the blurriness in the rest of the picture is what helps you focus on her delicate features. The perfect little curls framing her face and the fact that she looks amazing in purple just add to this portrait. To me, this is what it looks like classical music sounds, if that makes any sense. This picture makes me laugh every time I see it, because I remember how terrible that smoke smelled. It’s a smoke grenade, and because it is fireworks it has sulfur in it. So it smelled utterly terrible. She did not appreciate this at all. This is actually two smoke grenades. One is being held by mom off camera to the left to put the smoke behind her, and the other one is actually stuck inside the box that she is holding. It definitely dyed the inside of that box a deep purple. This was the first session of the year that year, and I wanted to make it spectacular! Location: State Botanical Garden of Georgia
This portrait hold a special place in my heart, because this girl has autism. If you know anything about people with autism, you’ll know that most of the time they find iContact difficult. I once asked an autistic person (not this girl) why, and she was able to explain that her brain takes many pictures as she is thinking, and too many photos of the same person is overwhelming and distracting to what they’re saying. So this girl is very much into singing and music. So we were having a sing-along and that’s how I got this photo. Her laugh and smile are such a rare thing to capture that this photo was super unique for her parents. Location: State Botanical Garden of Georgia
This girl spent most of the session either arguing with me when I asked her to do some thing, running away from bees crying, or licking her own arm to make me laugh. She is a straight up hot mess and the daughter of one of my very best friends in New Orleans, Time Worn Tales photography. So this photo I had in mind for a year and a half after I saw this tree. We were finally able to go out and take this picture, but it took quite a bit of bribery and cajoling to get her to actually lay down on this branch the way I had in my mind. This little fern covered tree branch is some thing that I never get in Georgia.

Accidental posing as some of my favorite images usually. Sky the unicorn here was simply eating grass, and the little girl looked down at her and smiled. Nothing forced, nothing premeditated, nothing even super special, but the background and the way that they are turned into each other makes this a very special piece. I love the gold crown and the gold and blush dress as they go well with the gold in the background of this picture. Location: Piccadilly Farm In Watkinsville GA
This girl is close to my heart, because she has epilepsy. I also have epilepsy, so I know what it’s like to live with seizures. This girl is one of the memorial princess section winners, and when I asked her what sort of photos that she wanted, she requested a unicorn portrait. She also wanted a rainbow dress, which I actually had to borrow from another photographer. I love how kids like this can bring a community together from across the world.
