I was just out in California teaching a class with Sigma lenses and Samy’s camera on how to photograph children! A lot of photographers struggle with how to get authentic expressions out of children without having them look too stiff, so that’s mostly what I teach in these classes. I have all kinds of fun silly games that I play with the children that I’m photographing so that it’s not a boring experience for them and I get real smiles. The students learn a pile of jokes and critical life skills like how to make fart noises with their hands.
I don’t tend to get a ton of images when I teach these classes because of course the students are supposed to be practicing their photography skills instead. But, these are the ones that I got while I was demonstrating before the students took their turns.
Also, I certainly learned a lot about California law before going out! I had no idea that all children who are working need to be accompanied by a studio teacher, even on Saturdays and even when it’s only two hours and requires no schoolwork. That was completely new territory for me!
