Radiance & Relaxation: Your Ultimate Guide to Preparing for a Stunning and Stress-Free Maternity Photography Session in Athens, GA

You’ve booked your maternity photo session. That’s exciting! This is a beautiful time to document your journey into motherhood. As your Athens, GA maternity photographer, my goal is to create images that reflect your glow and personality while keeping the whole experience easy, comfortable, and fun. With a little planning, you can walk into your session feeling confident and relaxed. Here are a few of my best tips to help you prepare.

1. Before the Session: Planning Together

Every session with Heather Larkin Photo starts with a personal consultation. This is where we talk through your ideas and goals for the shoot. We’ll go over your style, the look you want, and what kind of location feels right for you. Some people love soft outdoor light, others prefer the calm of a studio session. We’ll figure that out together. Having a plan ahead of time takes the pressure off so you can show up knowing exactly what to expect.

2. What to Wear for Maternity Photos in Georgia

Figuring out what to wear is one of the top questions I get. You want to feel comfortable and confident, and your outfit should help show off your bump in a way that feels like you. I have an extensive client closet full of maternity gowns you’re encouraged to use but if that’s not your thing here are some guidelines:

  • Form-Fitting is Flattering: Dresses that hug your bump help highlight your shape beautifully. Look for stretchy, comfortable fabrics that feel good on your skin.
  • Flowy Fabrics Look Beautiful in Photos: Long gowns, sheer robes, or layers of soft fabric add a dreamy feel and great movement to your pictures.
  • Pick Colors That Make You Feel Good: Jewel tones, soft pastels, rich neutrals like cream or grey, or a bold pop of color all work well. Since my photography style is colorful and true-to-life, you don’t need to shy away from vibrant colors.
  • Keep it Comfortable: Choose fabrics that move well and won’t leave marks on your skin. If something feels itchy or stiff, skip it.
  • For Partners and Kids: Choose outfits in colors that go well together without being identical. Simple, timeless looks work best. If you’re not sure what to pick, I’m happy to help with styling for the whole family.

3. Hair and Makeup: A Little Extra Care

Some clients like to get their hair and makeup done professionally for their session. If that feels like a treat, go for it! A bit of polish can give you a confidence boost and help you feel photo-ready. If you’d rather do your own, just aim for a slightly more finished version of your usual style. A natural look always photographs well. Soft curls, loose waves, or a simple updo are all great options.

4. Feeling Your Best on Session Day

  • Get Rest and Stay Hydrated: This helps you feel good and look refreshed.
  • Trust the Process: I’ll guide you through posing, expressions, and movement. You don’t need to know how to “be” in front of the camera — that’s my job.
  • Let Yourself Be Proud of This Moment: Pregnancy changes your body, and sometimes it’s easy to focus on what feels different. Try to shift your attention to the beauty of what your body is doing. That sense of pride and calm shows up in every photo.
  • Speak Up: If something feels awkward or uncomfortable, tell me. I’ll always adjust the pose or find a different approach.

5. What to Bring With You

While I provide props and a calm, beautiful environment, you might want to pack a few meaningful items:

  • A printed ultrasound image if you want
  • A family heirloom or personal memento
  • Water and a light snack
  • Comfortable shoes if we’re walking outdoors

6. Including Family Members

If your partner or children are part of the session, we’ll make sure it’s easy and fun for everyone. For older siblings, I’ll guide them through playful interactions and help them feel included in the story. These sessions are a great way to show how the family is growing — not just with a new baby, but with love and connection.

Getting ready for your maternity photo session should be something that adds to the excitement of this time. I’ll help with every detail so that by the time your session arrives, you can focus on feeling beautiful and enjoying the experience. If you have questions or want to chat about your ideas, I’d love to hear from you. Let’s make something you’ll be proud to look back on for years to come.
