Anna Kate mommy writes “At just two years old, Anna Kate lost the purposeful use of her hands and could no longer feed herself or play with her toys. That’s when her parents and doctor realized something was very wrong. Genetic testing confirmed a diagnosis of Rett Syndrome—a rare and severe neurological disorder. For the past 14 years, Anna Kate has lived with this devastating condition that prevents her from walking, talking, or using her hands. Every aspect of daily life—feeding, dressing, toileting—must be done for her. Spinal fusion surgery in 2023 was scary, but after a DIFFICULT recovery she is now STRONGER and straighter! This past year, Anna Kate was hospitalized several times due to g-tube and feeding complications. She was in severe pain until her doctors finally took her family’s urgency SERIOUSLY and investigated the cause of her distress and constant screaming. Anna Kate is now on the right medication and is much more comfortable. Despite these challenges, Anna Kate exudes joy and rarely complains. She embraces life with a radiant spirit, enjoying family activities like eating out, going on trips, and swimming. She loves school, church, and being around friends. Her love and laughter bring hope and happiness to all her know her!”
Heather’s thoughts: Anna Kate is seriously one of my favorite teenagers. Like our previous session we ended up having to do this in two parts because the first try she was just in tears due to pain and there was no way her mommy (or me) was going to put her though pictures. The second try went much better and I totally loved seeing her in better spirits. The biggest smile I got was right after mom told me she thinks burps are hilarious. Who knew that was a life skill I needed, but I could get some wee ones out and it worked! She has the best stepdad ever as well, and is so incredibly loved.
